about the competition

In a world where cultures intersect without always understanding one another, where images circulate faster than thought, it is essential to restore meaning to symbols, stories, and shared imagination. Cinema, as a total art form, is a vital expression of a people’s soul: it distills the beliefs, tensions, dreams, wounds, and hopes of a nation. It tells us as much about who we are as it does about who we aspire to become.

Culture Mirror was born from this idea: that creation is a universal language, capable of weaving deep connections among students from different cultures by inviting them to revisit the founding narratives of others as if they were their own.

Five countries are participating in this project — France, Russia, India, China, and Brazil — each selecting five emblematic films. These works will then be assigned to international students, who will be asked to explore them, understand their original context, and reinvent them as cultural brands relevant to their own society. Beyond the creative challenge, this project is an exercise in Otherness: it requires stepping outside oneself to embrace someone else’s perspective, showing humility in the face of an unfamiliar work, translating without betraying, interpreting without caricaturing. It transforms creation into a form of cultural mediation.

Design here becomes a tool for dialogue. It’s not about marketing a foreign film, but about listening to it, feeling it, and giving it new life through visual, typographic, and narrative codes rooted in another geographical, social, and symbolic reality. The best projects from each country will be showcased at the end of the competition as intersecting reflections of a world in search of mutual recognition — a mirror not for gazing at oneself, but for better seeing and understanding the other.

film selection guidelines

Each participating country has uploaded five national titles (1990–2020) to the shared project drive. You should choose a film from outside your own country, and your curator or professor will provide the download link.

Watch your chosen film in its original language with subtitles, and read the accompanying synopsis to better understand its meaning and cultural context.

awards and recognition

Five winners — one from each country (Brazil, China, France, India, and Russia) — will each receive a one-week cultural immersion trip to one of five destinations (Paris, St. Petersburg, Shanghai, Mumbai, or São Paulo). The prize includes international flights, five nights’ accommodation, and a visit to the partner university, with visa and travel formalities covered by the winners themselves.

Additionally, 15 outstanding projects (three per country) will be selected for a traveling exhibition presented across all participating countries. All shortlisted and winning participants will receive official recognition and certificates.
